DESCRIPTION:December 17\, 2021\n\nProgram Description:\n\nThe DC Water head
 quarters is a 150\,000 gsf office building built above and encapsulating a
 n operating sewage/storm pump station sited on the bank of the Anacostia R
 iver. Together\, the building and site incorporate state-of-the-art sustai
 nable and resilient design strategies that result in a dynamic workplace. 
 The bold\, innovative statement reflects the agency’s environmental stew
 ardship. The building’s sinuous form and layered skin are carefully shap
 ed by the opportunities and constraints of the site and also informed by c
 omputational analytics. The building’s north side features punched windo
 ws in green cladding recalling the historic use of copper in water transmi
 ssion. The south façade glass curtainwall accommodates views and daylight
 ing. Stepped-in areas create shading and a second layer of tinted glass in
  specific areas reduces heat loads and glare as determined by computationa
 l modeling. An innovative sewage heat recovery system heats and cools the 
 building by utilizing waste pumped through the facility below\, making it 
 one of the most energy efficient office buildings in the region. The campu
 s landscape and site design express the flow of water that is captured by 
 a cistern to be used for toilet flushing and irrigation. https://www.smith

 pproaches each project with a sensitivity to the site\, an unlocking of un
 tapped site features paired with architectural interventions that revitali
 ze and define a renewed sense of place. Working with a wide palette of too
 ls including parametric analysis\, sustainability strategy\, and formal ex
 perimentation\, Sven takes a fresh approach\, yet one that is meaningfully
  connected and intertwined with each particular site and context. His desi
 gn leadership has resulted in numerous awards in architecture\, historic p
 reservation\, sustainability\, and planning.
