participants at a Union Market location. Information on a specific gather
ing place the day of the tour will be sent prior to the event\, as well as
the location for the happy hour.\n\nAfter falling into disrepair in the 1
980s and 1990s\, the Union Market District is being revived. as a destinat
ion for restaurant and nightlife\, and high-rise apartments\, office build
ing\, retail and entertainment options are being developed to complement t
he focal point of Union Market.\n\nUnion Market was formally known as Unio
n Terminal Market . It became an important part of the Washington food inf
rastructure to feed a growing city population. It featured retail and whol
esales stores as well as a farmers' market. The market ran into trouble wi
th the city in the 1960s due to its failure to comply with sanitation and
safety standards. A new building was completed in 1967 to replace the orig
inal market\, and is today the food hall carrying the name "Union Market".
\n\nThe Union Market Historic District was designated in 2016. In 2017 the
Office of Planning and District of Columbia Department of Transportation
developed Florida Market (Union Market) streetscape guidelines that shape
public space for all streets in the market and those that define its bound
ary.\n\nTo learn more about the history of the area\, follow this link: ht
